Migrante BC represents a vital community voice for Filipino migrants in Vancouver, BC, rooted in the struggle for dignity and justice that began with the tragic story of Flor Contemplacion in 1995. Founded in 2008, we are a volunteer-led, non-profit organization born from the recognition that Filipino migration is fundamentally a product of poverty and joblessness in the Philippines, exacerbated by exploitative labor export policies. Our mission extends beyond immediate support to advocating for systemic change—we dream of a society where families are no longer torn apart by economic necessity, where decent work exists at home. We believe in the power of collective organizing, bringing together migrant Filipinos and allies in solidarity to fight for fundamental rights shared by all workers: fair wages, adequate benefits, and human dignity. Our work encompasses three pillars: rights and welfare advocacy for migrant workers, support for the democratic struggle in the Philippines through promotion of national industrialization, and education that equips our community with knowledge about migration realities. Since our founding, we have grown from a single chapter to part of Migrante Canada's 13-chapter network across the country. We have transformed victories into community spaces—Bahay Migrante now serves as both our headquarters and a sanctuary for vulnerable migrants. In Vancouver, BC, Migrante BC continues to arouse, organize, and mobilize our community with the conviction that jobs in the Philippines, not overseas, is the answer to Filipino migration.
