Founded in 2006, Armenian Autism Outreach Project Inc. represents a grassroots movement of professionals, parents, and individuals with autism working together to transform how the Armenian-American community in Glendale and throughout California understands and supports developmental disabilities. AAOP emerged from a recognition that culturally responsive, community-based support could make a meaningful difference in the lives of families navigating autism diagnosis and care.
At its heart, AAOP is driven by a powerful vision: an Armenian community where individuals affected by autism and related developmental disabilities are equal, valued participants in daily community life. The organization's mission centers on empowering families through education, camaraderie, and mutual support while fostering community-wide understanding and acceptance. By bringing together board members with deep expertise in speech-language pathology, family therapy, occupational therapy, and parent advocacy, AAOP creates spaces where families feel understood and supported.
What sets AAOP apart is its commitment to cultural responsiveness and family-centered care. The organization recognizes the unique intersection of Armenian cultural values and the autism experience, providing support in culturally appropriate ways. Through parent support groups, family events, and community gatherings, AAOP builds connections among families while educating teachers, administrators, and the broader Armenian community about autism. Operating entirely on a volunteer basis, AAOP demonstrates the power of community members united by shared purpose to create lasting change in Glendale and beyond.
