Founded in 1977 by a dedicated group of Chinese American physicians in the Hayward area, the Chinese American Physicians' Society (CAPS) has grown into a respected community organization serving San Leandro, CA and the broader Bay Area. What began as a vision to support Chinese American medical professionals has evolved into a diverse, inclusive organization welcoming physicians from all backgrounds and ethnicities. The society's commitment to social justice was strengthened following the Vincent Chin case in the early 1980s, which galvanized CAPS's mission to fight racial discrimination and promote equity within healthcare and the wider community. Honoring the legacy of its founders—including Drs. Lawrence Ng, George Wong, Rolland Wong, David Der, Leon Lee, and Thomas Fung—CAPS continues to embody their values of compassion, advocacy, and professional excellence. Today, the organization serves as a bridge between the medical community and those it serves, fostering greater awareness of the medical profession's responsibility to address healthcare disparities. CAPS members are united by a shared commitment to advancing medicine while advocating for accessible, affordable healthcare for all. By joining CAPS, physicians connect with a network of like-minded professionals dedicated to creating a more inclusive and equitable medical community. The organization's work extends beyond professional development to meaningful community impact, making it an essential resource for healthcare professionals who believe in the power of medicine to promote social change and improve lives.
