Gospel Choir WORKSHOP Series & Concert! All ages, backgrounds, faiths are invited to share in a musical experience of Joy and Community. Ever wanted to sing in a gospel choir? Do you start singing every time you hear "O Happy Day"? Did the movie "Sister Act" or "The Preacher's Wife" make you fall in love with gospel music all over again? This summer, renowned gospel musician and Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Founding Artistic Director Terrance Kelly is bringing the magic back to Santa Clarita, and you're invited to be part of the music. After a fantastic event last October that brought together old friends, new friends, and people who had never tried gospel singing before, we're back for a three-part workshop and concert series. St. Stephen's Episcopal has once again opened their doors, with Music Minister Josh Wenz co-hosting this joyful community experience. No auditions and no experience necessary. Songs are taught by ear in the Black gospel tradition. You just need to show up ready to sing! EVERYONE WELCOME! People of all ages, backgrounds, and faiths are invited to share in a musical experience of joy and community. Workshop #1 - July 11 Workshop # 2 - Aug 8 Workshop # 3 & Concert - Aug 22 Sign up for the Workshop today! And, please invite your friends and family to come to the show! On Saturday Aug 22, the Workshop Choir will gather at 3pm for Sound Check and a run through of the show before the concert. Doors will be at 6pm and the concert 7pm. Workshop Choir participants need to attend at least TWO of the three rehearsals (July 11, Aug 8, Aug 22 sound check) in order to perform at the concert. Sunday Jump is an arts organization at Pilipino Workers Center in LA’s Historic Filipinotown. Open mics are 1st Sundays, 5-7 pm. May - Nov. This is Sunday Jump’s 14th season! COMMUNITY GUIDELINES: (1) Express, not impress and (2) Free speech, not hate speech. It's not about the snaps and claps. It's about sharing the love of your art. It's not about putting people down. It's about uplifting our communities. OPEN MIC: Open mic-ers have 4 minutes MAX. Guaranteed 9 performers will be chosen through lottery, with the rest on on-call. No repeat performers on the same day. Order is randomized. For on-call, priority is given to first timers and open mic-ers have 3 minutes MAX or only one piece, whichever comes first. COVID-19 PROTOCOL: We recommend the following for attendees: 1. Please do not attend if you have COVID-19 or are sick, or were exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the 10 days before the event. 2. Wear masks responsibly. It is not required. Indoor seating is provided with discretion about maximum capacity. Overflow seating will be available outside with access to the food vendor and audio of the show with window viewing. Assaf Shelleg: about Jews; New Affordances in Contemporary Music
New music written by or about Jews no longer abides by exoticisms, national paraphernalia, or the prestige of “art music.” Instead, growing disillusioned with (or disinterested in) ideological apparatuses and tropes of Otherness, composers navigate through signs associated with Judaism while introducing new ethnographies in the form of fieldwork recordings, simulations of their oral behavioral patterns, or their entextualizing. With this they steadily undo the modernist divide between ethnography and art. The talk will situate the proliferation of contemporary Jewish art music in the ecosystem of new music, focusing on works by Chaya Czernowin, Heiner Goebbels, and Olga Neuwirth while considering the historiographical impact of the recordings released by the Milken Archive. This event is made possible by the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music
