Founded in 1969 by a small group of Puerto Rican migrants, El Centro Latino has grown from humble beginnings into a vital community institution serving Wilmington, Delaware and surrounding areas. What began as neighbors helping neighbors adapt to life in a new country has evolved into a multifaceted organization guided by core values of accountability, dignity, respect, excellence, empowerment, integrity, and passion. The organization's mission—to empower the Latino community through education, advocacy, partnerships and exceptional services—reflects its deep commitment to creating meaningful change in the lives of those it serves. Over five decades, El Centro Latino has demonstrated remarkable resilience and dedication, weathering challenges while continuously expanding its reach and impact. Today, the center operates multiple facilities including its main building at 403 North Van Buren Street and serves individuals across the entire lifespan, from infants in early learning centers to seniors in affordable housing. The organization's vision of a thriving Latino community drives every program and partnership, with staff and volunteers working to identify and address the social, economic, and political barriers facing Latino families. As a member of the UnidosUS Affiliate Network, El Centro Latino collaborates with regional and national partners to amplify its advocacy efforts. The center's journey reflects the strength and resilience of the Latino community in Wilmington, built on relationships, trust, and a shared commitment to mutual support and collective advancement.
