Founded in 1984 by approximately 20 families in the Hockessin, Delaware area, the Indo-American Association of Delaware (IAAD) emerged from a grassroots vision to create a secular, inclusive space for people from the Indian subcontinent to celebrate their shared identity and culture. What began as informal gatherings and monthly Indian movie screenings has evolved into the largest Indo-American organization in the region, serving thousands of community members and their families. The organization's roots trace back to the 1960s when the first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in Delaware to attend the University of Delaware. As the Indian population grew throughout the following decades, community leaders recognized the need for a formal structure to preserve cultural traditions and build meaningful connections. Today, IAAD reflects the profound cultural and religious diversity of India through its volunteer-driven board, active committees, and engaged membership base. IAAD's commitment to community extends beyond cultural celebration. The organization prioritizes intergenerational connection, ensuring younger members of the Indo-American community develop a strong understanding of their heritage.
