Rumi Night: “Rumi’s Message for Our Time: Love, Freedom, and Human Harmony” On behalf of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS), we are pleased to invite you to a special cultural evening titled “Rumi Night”, an evening of poetry, music, and shared conversation. Dedicated as Night of Rumi, the program celebrates Afghan, Christian, Persian, Jewish, Sufi, and American cultural heritage, reflecting the shared humanistic spirit expressed in Rumi’s timeless aesthetic poetries. As September 30 marks the anniversary of Rumi’s birth, and in connection with the academic conference “Religious Freedom in a Changing World: Faith, Pluralism, and Civic Life” taking place the same day at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., we will gather to honor Rumi through this cultural evening. The evening will feature: 1. Welcoming Remarks by Director of Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS), Dr Davood Moradian. 2. Launch of Persian translation of the book “Reopening Muslim Minds: A Return to Reason, Freedom, and Tolerance” by Mr. Mustafa Akyol, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity / Moderator: Ms. Amina Nezami. 3. Keynote Address by Professor Michael Barry, Princeton University professor and Historian of the Greater Middle East and Islamic world. 4. Cake-Cutting Ceremony Celebrating the 819th Anniversary of Rumi’s Birth. 5. Avant Garde Arts Collection from the Nukus Museum, Presented by Professor Ori Soltes, Teaching Professor at the Center for Jewish Civilization. 6. Music Performance by Arezoo LA Daf Ensemble. 7. Modern Persian Miniature Painting with Sarah Barzmehri
Dive into the vibrant world of Persian art with Sarah Barzmehri and learn to create stunning miniatures that tell a story. Sunday, July 26, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Inspired by the rich visual language of traditional Persian miniature painting, this workshop invites participants to explore contemporary approaches to this intricate and poetic art form. Through storytelling, symbolism, pattern, color, and composition, participants will create their own modern interpretations while learning about the history and aesthetics of Persian miniatures. Using acrylic and gold leaf we will experiment with detailed imagery, decorative elements, layered spaces, and narrative scenes. The workshop encourages both technical exploration and personal expression, blending tradition with contemporary themes and individual imagination. Level: Adults beginners Participants: 6 Cost: $100 Supplies : $30 material fee payable to the instructor Materials Provided: Watercolor or mixed media paper Fine-tip brushes Acrylic paints Gold leaf Pencils and erasers Colored pencils Gold or metallic paint/pens Collage materials such as patterned paper, magazines, or printed text (optional) Scissors and glue Palette and water container Paper towels or cloth rag Reference images or personal sketches for inspiration About Sarah Sarah Barzmehri studied fine arts at the renowned art school in Paris, France (Ècole Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Paris), and Graphic Design at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). She’s an accomplished artist, curator and educator. Through art, she gives form to her innermost feelings and unspoken thoughts. Sarah has been teaching adults and children for more than a decade, encouraging a free-spirited approach to creating from the unconscious.
