Consular Office is the representation of the Brazilian Government before local authorities and the Brazilian community residing therein.
The consular office can be a Consulate General, a Consulate, a Vice-Consulate or an Embassy that has a consular sector. Embassies in whose host cities there is a Brazilian Consulate General will not perform consular functions, since these will be the responsibility of that Consulate General.
Consular jurisdiction: District of Columbia, States of North Carolina, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and US bases except Guam.
Among the functions of the Consulate are:
- protect and provide assistance to Brazilian citizens in its jurisdiction, respecting current international treaties and local legislation;
- issue passports and other travel documents;
- issue visas for entry into Brazilian territory for foreign citizens;
- act as a notary and civil registry official, carrying out birth, marriage and death records, issuing powers of attorney, certificates and other notarial acts;
- make the consular registration;
- perform some acts proper to the Military Service;
- allow the exercise of the citizen's right to vote and other services determined by electoral legislation;
- assist in the repatriation of Brazilians in case of proven helplessness;
- defend Brazilian nationals from discrimination and ensure the guarantee of their human rights;
- verify the possibility of offering legal or psychological guidance to nationals;
- visit Brazilian detainees;
- prepare contingency plans for possible natural disasters or socio-political tensions.
