The honorary consuls have duties in defending the rights and interests of the Portuguese State and its citizens.
The honorary consuls are not authorised to practice consular acts, however in certain extraordinary and substantiated circumstances, the honorary consults are authorised to practice voter registration processes, civil registry and notary acts and issue travel documents.
The Portuguese Association of Maui (PAM) was founded in 1984.
The objectives of the Association are:
- Create further awareness of Hawaii's Portuguese heritage through social discourse, lectures, seminars and workshops which provide learning opportunities aimed at preservation and perpetuation of this unique heritage;
- Encourage and support Portuguese culture, folk arts, folklore and skills; including but not limited to music, dance, language, history and customs; to foster good will and social relationships among members;
- Foster awareness of the unique heritage of each ethnic group in an effort to promote appreciation for all of Hawaii's multi- ethnic groups;
- Encourage participation in events that promote good citizenship;
- Encourage and assist promising students of Portuguese ancestry in furthering their education.
