It is a known fact that immigrants who arrive in the United States have an extremely difficult time assimilating into the American way of life – both professionally as well as socially. Common difficulties experienced are: speech, business development, medical and dental, the U.S. banking system, lifestyle, personal practices, and cultural differences. These obstacles often times prove overwhelming to an individual with no help or mentor there to assist them.
Personal experiences from many such individuals – including many of the founding group members, demonstrated how such initial barriers left deep scars of insecurity and uncertainty thus providing effective roadblocks to development and integration into their new home and preventing them from developing professionally. Most newly arrived individuals find themselves stretched financially, due to the big gap in the currency exchange and the comparatively very high cost of living. Such individuals often have extreme difficulty in finding jobs – not only in their chosen field of study or experience, but in virtually all professions. This creates additional difficulties in providing immediate support for their families.
We are an accomplished group of professionals from industries such as financial services, management consulting and healthcare. They include risk managers, tax directors, business strategists, hedge fund consultants and investment analysts.

MAFA exists to promote unity and cooperation amongst Filipinx and Filipinx Americans around the Midwest by promoting Filipinx culture and Asian American awareness, coordinating meetings and events, and supporting the objectives of the MAFA Member Organizations.
MAFA's vision is to foster a safe, inclusive space for members in the Midwest to engage in social consciousness regarding Filipinx culture and issues, therefore defining and cultivating a Midwest Filipinx-American identity. Through this dialogue, we aim to bridge members to the greater network of the Filipinx diasporic community and to explore personal and professional opportunities and resources.
MAFA encompasses many Filipino-American/Asian-American organizations located in the Midwest, and the list of member organizations is only growing. MAFA focuses on preserving our roots and cultivating the development of Filipino student organizations through various events such as the MAFA Picnic, Leadership Retreats, Spring Conference, and Conference within a Conference. The MAFA organization is widely renowned for its annual leadership conference, called the Midwest Filipino-American Summit (MFAS). As of 2012, MFAS has provided the students of MAFA Member Organizations workshops, games, and team-building exercises that encourage them to discover their identities and become leaders of tomorrow.

Janice is a passionate attorney dedicated to increasing access of Filipinos to high quality legal services, especially in the areas of divorce, custody, child support, and alimony. She was born at Clark Air Force Base in Angeles City in the Philippines. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy Studies in 2005 and DePaul University College of Law in 2013.
Janice noticed that there were few attorneys providing legal support to Filipinos, especially women and single mothers, in family law. Because of the strong Catholic tradition in the Philippines, divorce is a taboo topic with little support available to Filipinos seeking advice and assistance. Janice hopes to provide understanding and compassion to Filipinos struggling to find support with these legal issues.
Being fluent in Tagalog and having strong ties to her Filipino heritage, Janice is able to effectively advocate for her fellow kababayan in the American court system.
