Americans have many choices as to how to spend their money and time, and have the freedom to move around from coast-to-coast. Americans have many opportunities and value their independence fiercely. “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body” ~ Miroslav Tyrš, founder of the Sokol Movement, Prague, 1862
Sokol Spirit's mission is to provide fitness and community for individuals and families through physical, educational, cultural and social programming.
Sokol is an organization that was founded by Dr. Miroslav Tyrs on the credo: “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”. The original organization was formed in 1862 in the Czech lands (now Czech Republic and Slovak Republic). “Sokol” is the Czech word for falcon: a symbol of strength, beauty, harmony and freedom.
With waves of immigrants since the 1800s, the first United States Sokol unit was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1865. Soon it had many units including in Chicago, offering physical training in gymnastics and other athletics, as well as providing cultural awareness and family oriented activities. There are thriving, vital affiliates of the American Sokol organization around the United States.
Sokol is a great group of people bonded by common interests, goals, and sometimes heritage and ethnicity. If you are looking for a place for children to learn personal discipline, physical fitness and gymnastic skills, song and dance, Sokol is ready and waiting for them.
