Founded in 1989 by three visionary Des Moines women—Louise Rosenfield Noun, Senator Elaine Szymoniak, and attorney Barbara Barrett—Chrysalis Foundation emerged from a shared conviction that girls and women face systemic barriers to success simply because of their gender. Based in West Des Moines, IA, the organization has spent over three decades working to close opportunity gaps and build a community where every girl and woman has support, resources, and pathways to lead a successful life.
Chrysalis operates from a deeply relational philosophy. The foundation believes that meaningful change happens through genuine partnerships with community organizations, nonprofit agencies, school leaders, donors, volunteers, and stakeholders who share their vision. Rather than working in isolation, Chrysalis functions as a connector and amplifier—identifying the most effective organizations already serving girls and women, then providing grants and strategic support to expand their reach and impact.
The foundation's work addresses urgent, documented needs. In Iowa today, one in five women experience sexual assault during college, nearly 1,000 girls and women face homelessness daily, one in ten girls drops out of high school, and 70 percent of female-headed households live at or near poverty. Chrysalis responds with evidence-based solutions, recognizing that investing in girls and women reduces poverty, increases productivity, and strengthens entire communities. With an endowment ensuring operational sustainability, Chrysalis channels 100 percent of community gifts directly to girls and women, embodying the founders' original vision of creating lasting, measurable change.
