Founded at the direct request of New Mainers who fled war and conflict to seek safety for their families, New England Arab American Organization represents a community-driven response to integration challenges facing Arab immigrants in Portland, Maine and beyond. This energetic nonprofit was established by and for the people it serves, reflecting the voices, experiences, and priorities of immigrant and refugee communities. NEAAO's leadership and staff share the language, culture, values, and concerns of those they support, creating authentic connections built on mutual understanding and compassion. The organization envisions a future where culturally diverse communities thrive with a sense of pride, inclusion, empowerment, and fulfillment. Recognizing that Arab immigrants often experience profound grief during transition—loss of homeland, family separation, and cultural displacement—NEAAO addresses these emotional and practical needs through holistic support. Women and children, who face particular vulnerability and isolation, receive specialized attention and culturally-informed services. NEAAO's vision extends across New England, with plans to establish multiple hubs in different cities to ensure Arabic-speaking populations have access to comprehensive support regardless of location. Currently operating in Portland and Westbrook, the organization continues expanding its reach throughout Maine. All programs are provided free of charge, sustained through community volunteers, in-kind donations, and financial support from those committed to building more diverse, integrated communities. NEAAO embodies the principle that compassion combined with cultural expertise creates transformative change for families rebuilding their lives in Maine.
