Founded in 1990 by six visionary mothers in the Glen Burnie area, the Arundel Bay Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. has grown into a vital community organization serving families throughout Gambrills, MD and the surrounding region. The chapter was established in response to a recognized need for a family-centered organization that would strengthen African American families and prepare young people for leadership in an increasingly diverse society. What began as a steering committee of six dedicated women—Earnestine Butler, Christine Davenport, Doris Durrett, Nancy Jernigan, Erretta Morris, and Sylvia Tilghman—quickly expanded to 15 founding members who shared a common vision of excellence and service. Over three decades, the organization has remained committed to its core mission of raising the next generation of African American leaders while enhancing the lives of all children. The chapter's programming exposes children and teens to enriching experiences that cultivate confidence, intelligence, and an appreciation for their history and culture. Operating as a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 to 19, the Arundel Bay Area Chapter continues to offer programming rooted in leadership development, cultural enrichment, community service, and philanthropic giving. The chapter's presence in Gambrills reflects its expansion beyond its original Glen Burnie roots, now serving a broader geographical region while maintaining the values and vision that inspired its founding mothers nearly 35 years ago.
