Founded on March 24, 1919—before women even won the right to vote—the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan represents over a century of advocacy, mentorship, and community building in Lansing, MI. What began as a small gathering of five pioneering women attorneys has evolved into a dynamic statewide organization with thousands of members united by a shared commitment to advancing women in the legal profession and promoting justice for all. The organization's rich legacy includes bold advocacy efforts that have increased women's representation in law and leadership, championed equity in Michigan's courts and communities, and supported critical social initiatives from World War II efforts to ongoing discussions about labor rights and gender equity.
Today, WLAM serves as a vibrant community where legal professionals find strength, support, and authentic connection. The organization recognizes that meaningful change comes through collective action—whether members are advocating in courtrooms or on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol, WLAM's voice is stronger when joined together. With a welcoming philosophy captured in this year's theme, "Come As You Are," WLAM provides countless ways for members to engage: joining one of 19 specialized committees, attending professional development events, contributing to the WLAM Journal, or connecting with peers through the WLAM First Facebook community.
WLAM's commitment extends beyond networking to tangible impact. The organization is dedicated to securing the rights of women in society, advancing women's interests in the legal profession, and promoting equality and social justice. For over a century, WLAM has been a place where women lawyers strengthen professional ties, share knowledge and experience, mentor the next generation, and work together to build a more just legal system and society.
