The Heart of America Japan-America Society was founded in May of 1962.
Our mission is to further understanding between the peoples of Japan and the Greater Kansas City area by promoting social, cultural and educational exchanges. It is a non-profit, non-political 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. This JAS has no paid staff. All of the work of the Society is done through volunteers.
Our organization serves the counties of Wyandotte, Douglas and Leavenworth in Kansas, and the counties of Jackson, Cass, Clay, and Platte in Missouri. But we also encourage friends from anywhere to be a part of our events and mission. We often send newsletters to members out of town including residents in Japan and former Kansas Citians.

The Japan-America Society of Saint Louis (JAS) was founded in 1967 with the mission to promote friendship, understanding, and exchange between the people of Japan and St. Louis. It serves as the major information and resource center about Japan in the St. Louis Metropolitan region. The Society also serves as the umbrella organization for the Japan America Society Women’s Association, Seinen-kai (Association of Young Men and Women), and supports the St. Louis Japanese Language School in St. Louis.
Our largest community engagement is the annual Japanese festival, held at the Missouri Botanical Garden every Labor Day weekend. The 3-day festival is one of the largest and oldest Japanese festivals in North America, drawing 30,000 to 40,000 visitors annually. The Society also partners with local institutions such as universities and museums to produce authentic Japanese educational and cultural programs and events. We also offer regular ikebana workshops and tea ceremonies, an annual Shinnenkai New Year celebration, business networking events with expert speakers, and an golf tournament. JAS has also added a Japan-themed Trivia Night to our line-up of annual events. Membership is open to all individuals, regardless of heritage, who are interested in Japan and US-Japan relations. The Society provides opportunities to make new friends, to learn about and experience Japanese culture, and to network with civic, educational, and business leaders with Japan interests. The Society also provides leadership opportunities, including for young people.

The St. Louis Chapter of the JACL has its origins starting in 1946. The legacy of the St. Louis JACL is that our chapter’s name is forever etched in stone at the entrance to the Japanese Garden. We take pride in the JACL; the various annual events supported and/or sponsored by the chapter attest to the fact that we are a close and proud organization.
The St. Louis JACL continues to monitor important issues that affect our daily lives; on both a local and national level. The chapter is active in areas dealing with: anti-Asian violence, the promoting of accurate accounts of the Japanese American experience in our nation’s textbooks; and various other civil rights issues.
We have worked with other ethnic groups to enhance understanding between all peoples of all ethnic backgrounds. By working together, we can make a difference; continuing to gain respect and raise our influence as a member of the minority group within our community.
The Japanese American Citizens League is a national organization whose ongoing mission is to secure and maintain the civil rights of Japanese Americans and all others who are victimized by injustice and bigotry. The leaders and members of the JACL also work to promote cultural, educational and social values and preserve the heritage and legacy of the Japanese American community.
