Based at the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque, the Black Law Students Association represents a community-centered approach to legal education and professional development. This student organization exists to ensure that Black students pursuing law degrees have the support, resources, and community they need to thrive in their academic journey and beyond. BLSA's foundational mission reflects a deep commitment to addressing systemic inequities within the legal profession. The organization focuses on building awareness and commitment to the needs of the Black community among both law students and practicing attorneys. BLSA recognizes that completing law school is a significant achievement, and the organization stands committed to supporting every Black student at UNM in reaching that goal. Operating within the UNM School of Law community in Albuquerque, New Mexico, BLSA connects students with broader networks of Black attorneys and legal professionals. Founded in 1982, the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association emerged from the vision of four pioneering African American attorneys who recognized an unmet need in the Albuquerque legal community. Tommy Jewell, Hannah Best, Raymond Hamilton, and Angela Jewell established NMBLA to create a dedicated space addressing the unique professional needs of Black attorneys in New Mexico. What began as a small group of four dedicated legal professionals has grown into a vibrant organization of over 75 members who remain committed to the original mission. NMBLA embodies values of excellence, justice, and community service, working to conduct continuing legal education, improve judicial selection processes, and study legislative needs that affect New Mexico residents. The organization is deeply rooted in protecting civil rights through the legal profession, recognizing that attorneys play a vital role in advancing justice and equality. Based in Albuquerque, NMBLA has become a cornerstone of the state's legal community, fostering meaningful relationships among Black attorneys while creating pathways for the next generation through partnerships with law students. The association's commitment extends beyond professional development to active community engagement, demonstrated through scholarship programs and collaborative efforts with legal community partners. NMBLA represents a legacy of perseverance, professional achievement, and dedication to serving the Albuquerque and New Mexico communities through the practice of law.
