Talk by Professor Ira Robinson
It is generally acknowledged that the story of Rabbi Judah Loewe (Maharal) of Prague and the Golem in the form that remains in the popular imagination to this day was the work of Rabbi Yehuda Yudel Rosenberg (1860-1935). Rosenberg’s book on the Maharal and the Golem (1909) has been described by the late Yosef Dan as the most important contribution of Hebrew literature to world literature.
How and in what context did this work see the light of day? In answering that question, Professor Robinson will begin by explaining the Maharal’s attraction for Hasidic Jews in general and for Rabbi Rosenberg in particular. He will then situate the Maharal in the context of Rosenberg’s publications and briefly discuss his other works that relate to the Maharal. Finally, the lecturer will explain in detail the reasons that Rosenberg’s portrayal of the Maharal and the Golem resonated so strongly among Jews in the early twentieth century so as to make this narrative a classic work.
Ira Robinson is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies in the Department of Religions and Cultures at Concordia University, where he taught for 42 years. He received his B.A. at Johns Hopkins University, his B.H.L. at Baltimore Hebrew College, his M.A. at Columbia University and his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. He served as the Chair of the Department of Religion and Director of the Concordia University Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies.
The event is organized by the Society for the History of Czechoslovak Jews with support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York and Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association.

About Musica Reginae Productions:
Founded in 2000, Musica Reginae Productions (MRP) brings innovative programming and world-renowned artists to concert spaces in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the world. MRP’s mission is to be “Your natural choice for fine music in Queens.”
MRP produces affordable, informative, and family friendly concerts featuring music that draws its inspiration from the classical, chamber, opera, jazz and world music literature. Our concerts provide a venue for talented and exciting young and established artists and we have become increasingly devoted to presenting new music by emerging composers, particularly those who have an affiliation with NYC and with our home borough of Queens. MRP fulfills its educational outreach mission with its Community Concerts for Kids, a free interactive, educational series for children and families ages 4 and up, led by teaching artists Beata Moon and MRP Artistic Director Barbara Podgurski. In addition, our artists perform at several public events every year including the 9/11 ceremonies in lower Manhattan and have also performed for Pope Francis during his Papal Visit of 2015. MRP is able to present top-notch performances each season because of the support it receives from individual and corporate sponsors in addition to partial funding from the Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts and NYC & Co.

A tragicomic tale that recounts the history of Italy from the postwar period to the present day, seen through the eyes of two brothers.
Running Time: 60 min, In Italian with English Supertitles
PATRIA tells the story of Italy’s Years of Lead through the eyes of a “blank” character, a Dostoevskian fool whom everyone considers the village idiot. After hitting his head as a child—perhaps because of his brother—he is called Abel; he frantically searches for traces of his brother Cain, who disappeared in a railway attack (the Italicus massacre). The history of Italy from the postwar period to the present day is seen through the eyes of two brothers who have mysteriously crossed paths with the bloodiest events in Italian history: massacres, coups, terrorism, lobbies, mafias, secret services—those affairs that helped shape the Italy of our grandparents into the country we will leave to our children. The story of Italy is inevitably tragicomic, where the memories of heroes and villains become inseparably intertwined, just like the stories of our two brothers. A family biography that ultimately becomes the biography of a nation.
