Founded in 1980 by Dr. Aileen Riotto Sirey in New York, NY, the National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW) emerged from a simple but powerful question: why didn't an organization exist specifically for women of Italian ancestry? What began as a visionary idea, inspired by pioneering figure Geraldine Ferraro, has grown into an extraordinary international community spanning four decades of service and impact.
NOIAW is the only national organization specifically dedicated to women of Italian heritage, welcoming members of every ethnicity who share a commitment to preserving Italian culture, language, and traditions. The organization's founding members, including Geraldine Ferraro and Matilda Raffa Cuomo, established two core missions that continue to guide NOIAW today: supporting the educational and professional aspirations of members and combating ethnic stereotypes by elevating positive role models in every field.
More than just a professional network, NOIAW creates a thriving, inclusive community where women of Italian ancestry connect, inspire, and enrich one another through shared heritage and values. Members serve as keepers of Italian culture while pursuing excellence in their professional lives and personal endeavors. Through monthly activities, cultural events, regional gatherings, and national conferences, NOIAW members unite around their pride in Italian-American identity and commitment to mutual support. The organization's evolution into an international presence, connecting women across the United States and internationally, reflects the strength and relevance of its mission. NOIAW remains steadfastly committed to honoring the accomplishments and advancements of Italian American women while building a future grounded in cultural pride, professional achievement, and community belonging.
