Honorary Consuls of France are either French citizens or citizens of the host country who are nominated by the French “Ministère des Affaires Etrangères” and delegated by the Consul General of the circumscriptions to which they belong. They are not diplomats by training and are not paid. They are, however, officially accredited by the host country and enjoy privileges and immunities as defined by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations dated 24 April 1963.
The Honorary Consuls perform certain administrative functions; protect their constituent inhabitants and travelers; facilitate visits by political representatives and business leaders, and promote trade, investment and the arts.
Since 1955 we have been dedicated to promoting the French language and its culture through programs in education and the arts.
The mission of the Alliance Française de Tulsa is to promote French language and culture through programs in education and the arts, to improve cross-cultural understanding, and to strengthen intercultural communication. The group is organized exclusively for cultural purposes as described under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
L’Alliance Française de Tulsa is proud to be affiliated with a worldwide network founded in Paris on July 21, 1883, when the Alliance Française de Paris was created to promote French language and culture and to foster positive relations between all Francophones and Francophiles. Original members included: the scientist Louis Pasteur, the diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, the writers Jules Verne and Ernest Renan, and the publisher Armand Colin.
We are members of the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA (AFUSA), whose mission is to support its individual member chapters in their efforts to promote French language and francophone culture, cross-cultural understanding and the strengthening of intercultural communication.
Our mission is to promote and advocate for French culture and language programs and to foster cultural and educational exchanges and partnerships that develop community between Central Oklahoma and the French-speaking world.
The founders of the Alliance Française of Oklahoma City defined their mission in 1955 as follows: “to teach the speaking, reading and writing of the French language, the appreciation of French culture, art, music, drama, dance and cinema, and to advance and encourage friendship and mutual respect between the people of France and America”.
Today the Alliance Française is discovering a new energy. Our goal is to continue to meet the needs of our local chapter in line with the founders’ original mission, and to respond to the requests from our Franco-American community to expand and enrich our programs.
