Founded in 2008 in Newport, OR, PFLAG Oregon Central Coast emerged from a profound community need following the loss of a local high school student to suicide—a tragedy that galvanized LGBT professionals and concerned community members to take action. What began as a response to one family's heartbreak has grown into a vital support network serving parents, family members, and friends throughout Lincoln County who are navigating their relationships with LGBTQ loved ones. The organization embodies the philosophy that relationships are precious and that families thrive when they stay connected across differences.
At its heart, PFLAG Oregon Central Coast operates on the principle of "families helping families." Members represent all walks of life, united by genuine love and concern for their children and friends. The chapter creates intentional spaces—both online and in-person—where people can share authentic experiences, learn from one another, and discover practical ways to support their loved ones meaningfully. Everyone is welcome, including many LGBT individuals who find community and affirmation at meetings. Beyond support circles, the organization is deeply committed to public education that challenges misconceptions and advocacy work that advances equal civil rights. By fostering understanding and celebrating human diversity, PFLAG Oregon Central Coast works toward a world where LGBTQ people in Newport and surrounding communities can live safely with full dignity and respect, free from discrimination and harassment.
