Rooted in the Greater Philadelphia area and based in Narberth, PA, the Japanese American Citizens League Philadelphia Chapter carries a rich and meaningful history spanning back to 1947. The chapter emerged from the experiences of Japanese Americans who resettled on the East Coast following World War II, transforming the Philadelphia Nisei Council into an official JACL chapter through the leadership of pioneers like Tesua Iwasaki. Today, the organization honors this legacy while building bridges between generations of Japanese Americans—from the Issei and Nisei who established themselves in the community, to the Sansei and beyond.
The chapter's mission centers on preserving Japanese American heritage and fostering meaningful connections within the community. Members work together to celebrate cultural traditions through events, performances, and cultural education, ensuring that younger generations understand and appreciate their heritage. The Philadelphia Chapter has been instrumental in supporting community gatherings and cultural celebrations that bring Japanese American families together while sharing their traditions with the broader Narberth and Philadelphia community. With a current membership of over 175 members, the chapter represents a vibrant, growing community committed to maintaining family traditions, supporting one another, and contributing to the rich cultural diversity of the Delaware Valley region.
