Founded in 1972 in Pittsburgh, PA, Persad Center stands as the nation's second oldest licensed mental health center specifically created to serve the LGBTQ+ community. Born from the grassroots activism of gay leaders Randal Forrester and James Huggins, Persad emerged directly from community demand for safe, nondiscriminatory mental health services. What began as an underground Pittsburgh gay hotline providing information and community connection evolved into a comprehensive human services organization dedicated to improving the well-being of LGBTQ individuals, HIV/AIDS-affected communities, and their loved ones throughout western Pennsylvania. Over five decades, Persad has pioneered groundbreaking programs including the first AIDS support program in the tri-state area, a domestic violence treatment program for same-sex couples, and Pennsylvania's first nonprofit fitness facility for transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming individuals. The organization's deep commitment to community is reflected in its comprehensive impact: offering senior social and educational programming, youth afterschool support, food assistance, and extensive therapy services. Persad's mission extends beyond clinical care to include community education, Safe Zone programming to combat hate crimes and discrimination, and family support groups like TransParent, where relatives learn to affirm their LGBTQ loved ones. As a regional SAGE affiliate, Persad continues its founding vision of creating affirming, judgment-free spaces where LGBTQ people can thrive.
