Association of Black Women Physicians
The Association of Black Women Physicians is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to the improvement of public health and welfare, through the advancement of knowledge concerning women and community health. We endeavor to enhance the personal and professional quality of life of present and future Black women physicians. The Association of Black Women Physicians empowers Black Women to lead in health and wellness for ourselves and the community through premiere educational programs. The organization creates and supports numerous community health and wellness events that continue the tradition and goals set forth by the original charter members.
ABWP began in 1982 when approximately fifty African-American women physicians met to share their experiences and to discuss career development. The women recognized the need for an organized support of African-American women pursuing a profession in medicine. These insightful women formally created ABWP and began this nonprofit organization that continues to positively contribute to society, science, medicine and its members.
ABWP provides an ongoing forum to support the success of African-American women in medicine, science, and public health. It also creates critical opportunities for social networking and mentorship to students and trainees; along with community health literacy and public health advocacy. Lastly, the organization annually distributes scholarships to deserving medical students.
The Association of Black Women Physicians is an organized network of Black women physicians committed to the health equity and inclusion and improvement in public health and welfare, through the advancement of knowledge concerning women and community health.
