EmpowerMOM Presented By Black Girls Mental Health Foundation
EmpowerMOM is an uplifting community event for mothers. We aim to prepare and equip mothers for childbirth and beyond. EmpowerMOM was created by Dr. Phindile Erika Chowa, an Emergency Medicine physician and founder of EMCare2U, after witnessing firsthand how unprepared and unsupported many women feel during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Dr. Chowa envisioned a gathering where women could learn, connect, and feel uplifted — a space where education, community, and culturally competent support come together. EmpowerMOM was designed to bring birth workers, resources, and families into one room so moms are no longer navigating these seasons alone. Through EmpowerMOM, Dr. Chowa’s mission is clear: to bridge the gaps in postpartum care, improve maternal health outcomes, and build a stronger village for mothers, especially Black mothers, during the most vulnerable and transformative seasons of their lives. April's EmpowerMOM is presented by Black Girls Mental Health Foundation , a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing mental health support, resources, and training to Black women. This event is proudly being held during Black Maternal Health Week, a time dedicated to honoring, supporting, and advocating for Black mothers and birthing people. So get ready to be showered with love, support, and expert guidance at every step of your journey. Whether you're trying to conceive, expecting your first baby or your fourth, or navigating the postpartum period, EmpowerMOM is a warm, high-impact event created to celebrate you, support you, and equip you with the tools you need for a confident pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. Charis and the Auburn Avenue Research Library welcome Keisha N. Blain in conversation with Beverly Guy-Sheftall for a celebration of Without Fear: Black Women and the Making of Human Right, anaccount of Black Women's aspirations, strategies, and struggles to pioneer a human rights approach to combating systems of injustice. Even before they were recognized as citizens of the United States, Black women understood that the fights for civil and human rights were inseparable. Over the course of two hundred years, they were at the forefront of national and international movements for social change, weaving connections between their own and others’ freedom struggles around the world. Without Fear tells how, during American history, Black women made humans rights theirs: from worldwide travel and public advocacy in the global Black press to their work for the United Nations, they courageously and effectively moved human rights beyond an esoteric concept to an active, organizing principle. Acclaimed historian Keisha N. Blain tells the story of these women—from the well-known, like Ida B. Wells, Madam C. J. Walker, and Lena Horne, to those who are still less known, including Pearl Sherrod, Aretha McKinley, and Marguerite Cartwright. Blain captures human rights thinking and activism from the ground up with Black women at the center, working outside the traditional halls of power. By shouldering intersecting forms of oppression—including racism, sexism, and classism—Black women have long been in a unique position to fight for freedom and dignity. Without Fear is an account of their aspirations, strategies, and struggles to pioneer a human rights approach to combating systems of injustice.

The Stone Mountain Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. began in 1985 when nine visionary mothers gathered to establish a community dedicated to enriching the lives of African American children. Based in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and serving families throughout DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties, this chapter has grown into a thriving organization of over 80 passionate mothers committed to ensuring every child has the power to learn, succeed, and understand their heritage. Founded on the principle that mothers working together create powerful change, the Stone Mountain Chapter was officially chartered in September 1986, becoming the third chapter in the metropolitan Atlanta area. For nearly four decades, these dedicated women—many of whom are leaders in education, medicine, law, and other professions—have invested their time, talent, and resources into creating wholesome, enriching experiences that build lasting friendships and develop confident young leaders. The chapter's members share a deep commitment to African American heritage and community empowerment, reflected in their comprehensive approach to youth development that spans leadership training, volunteer service, and civic engagement. What sets the Stone Mountain Chapter apart is the personal investment of its mother members, who view their work not just as programming but as a sacred responsibility to empower the next generation. Through their collective dedication and the relationships they've built over three decades, these mothers continue to inspire change and create opportunities for children to discover their potential and embrace their identity.
