A century ago, on April 11, 1918, nine dynamic women lawyers united to form the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA) for the purpose of achieving equality, diversity, fairness and opportunity for women lawyers and all women.1 Since then, the Association has grown to include over 400 members and, through its affiliation with the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY), has spearheaded countless advances for women.
The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) is one of the nine stakeholder groups of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Established in 2009, the WGC now consists of 33 women’s and environmental civil society organizations, who are working to ensure that women’s voices and their rights are embedded in all processes and results of the UNFCCC framework, for a sustainable and just future, so that gender equality and women’s human rights are central to the ongoing discussions. As the WGC represents the voices of hundreds and thousands of people across the globe, members of the Constituency are present at each UNFCCC meeting and intersessional to work alongside the UNFCCC Secretariat, governments, civil society observers and other stakeholders to ensure that women’s rights and gender justice are core elements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The goal of the Women’s and Gender Constituency (WGC) is to formalize the voice of the women’s and gender civil society organizations present and regularly active in UNFCCC processes, and to develop, streamline and advocate common positions. The Constituency aims to bring together as many NGO observers accredited to the UNFCCC as possible to work democratically towards achieving its goals. Individuals and organizations who are not accredited to the UNFCCC are encouraged to work through those accredited members and participate in the WGC-hosted advocacy groups.
The Constituency draws upon global commitments to gender equality and women’s rights, especially as they relate to climate change, and toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and related commitments and Rio-Conventions. The Constituency works to ensure that human rights and gender equality are firmly anchored in all climate actions under the UNFCCC and to challenge the extractive, exploitative and patriarchal economic model which has resulted in the climate crisis.
We’re the leading members’ network of financial organizations dedicated to championing the female economy — the world’s largest, fastest-growing market, and yet one that remains untapped. As a unique network with members from over 135 countries, we share the ambition of unlocking the full value of the female economy.
Everything we do is based on a win-win approach where financial organizations grow their businesses by accelerating women’s financial power. From creating real and digital platforms where members can learn from each other’s on-the-ground experiences, to publishing our own proprietary data and research, to advocating for global policy change — we inspire and equip our members to design and refine women-centered products, services and strategies that will bring about a new paradigm for women’s financial experiences.
The mission of the Ms. Foundation for Women is to build women’s collective power in the U.S. to advance equity and justice for all.
We achieve our mission by investing in, and strengthening, the capacity of women-led movements to advance meaningful social, cultural and economic change in the lives of women.
We believe in a just and safe world where power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or age.
We believe that equity and inclusion are the cornerstones of a true democracy in which the worth and dignity of every person are valued.
The Women’s Empowerment Coalition of NYC mission is to build power and unity among women from diverse communities through storytelling, education, organizing and leadership development. WECNYC brings women together to share our successes and challenges as members of marginalized communities providing civic, financial, professional, and other training and resources as means to empower and build capacity. We build intergenerational solidarity among women from across immigrant communities to nurture formidable leaders in the fights for immigrant rights, women’s rights, and racial, social and economic justice.
WEDO is a global advocacy organization established in 1991 by former U.S. Congresswoman Bella Abzug (1920-1998) and feminist activist and journalist Mim Kelber (1922-2004). It grew out of an extraordinary group of women, including Bella and Gloria Steinem, who started Women USA in 1979, and became the organization it is today through the vision of WEDO pioneers, Wangari Maathai, Vandana Shiva, Thais Corral, and many others. In 2011, WEDO celebrated its official 20th anniversary!
WEDO has been a leader in organizing women for international conferences and actions, earning a reputation as a trailblazer in the international women’s rights movement. Read more of our history on our website.
WEDO recognized that the hard-won policy commitments to women’s rights that emerged from the major UN conferences of the 1990s were not enough to improve women’s daily lives. WEDO has spent the last few years focused on deeper collaboration with Southern partners to increase the number of women leaders at all levels, to implement global policy gains at the national level, and to hold governments accountable to their commitments on women’s rights.
Headquartered in New York, WEDO is a registered non-profit organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and is an accredited non-governmental organization with the United Nations. WEDO programs receive financial support from government and UN donor agencies and partners, individual donors, and foundations.
In 2006 WEDO was awarded the Champion of the Earth award by UNEP, citing WEDO as “a champion in the field of women’s economic, social and gender rights and a beacon for the empowerment of women across the environmental and development debate.”
In 2010, WEDO was awarded by the National Council for Research on Women (NCRW) for outstanding advocacy to integrate a gender perspective into climate change arenas.
As a global women’s advocacy organization, WEDO envisions a just world that promotes and protects human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment.
