b) “Scholarship” support for students of Hellenic descent who are pursuing careers in health care fields.
c) Support “Philanthropic” missions both locally and internationally; locally through HMS Philadelphia’s Community Service Initiative and internationally though causes such as Hellenicare.
Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia is a volunteer-based organization with the mission of preserving and promoting Hellenism and the Greek-American experience in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, with a goal of reconnecting both youth and adults to their common heritage.
GAHSP is developing and preserving online content including artifacts, photographs, recordings, documentaries, and video interviews of local Greek American historical significance. In addition, our staff and volunteers collaborate to develop and sponsor programming showcasing the many different aspects of the community. Some of these programs comprise of the Greek immigrant’s experience in America, the Greek-owned diners and restaurants, the extraordinary Greek-American women, and the Greek-American bands that have entertained us for over a century. GAHSP is also creating the “Greeks of…” section where specific communities can showcase the history of the Greek community, such as Greeks of Reading and Greeks of Upper Darby. GAHSP is constantly creating new programs and events to meet our mission and goals.
GAHSP works on the premise that we all have special talents and skills that we share to make a stronger community and meet the goals of our organization. When we couple this, along with an innate desire to give back, and our common philhellenic thread which inspires us to collaborate across generations and affiliated organizations to further nurture our Greek American community. A community which has been so much a part of our lives.
The mission of the American-Hellenic Foundation of Western Pennsylvania (AHFWP) is to foster greater understanding of the culture, history, language and arts of Greece, past and present, by providing funds for scholarships, research and education in established or seed programs that address these aims, in worthy institutions of higher learning in Western Pennsylvania and by sponsoring academic and cultural programs and events linking all peoples in America and Greece.
The centerpiece and conduit of activities which will enable the mission of the Foundation will be a Hellenic Cultural Center and Heritage Museum to be located in the center of Western Pennsylvania's quadrant of its four major institutes of higher learning, the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University, Carlow University and Robert Morris University.
This Center will serve as a meeting place of students, visitors and all individuals interested in learning all about the Greek experience in, and contribution to Western Pennsylvania and will serve as a central resource to connect all interested individuals with every aspect of modern and historical Greece.
