The GMU homecoming experience is NOT what you think it is…
Our GMU Black Alumni and Friends group representing DECADES (80s, 90s, & early 2000s) have created our own homecoming experience. Each one provides another chance to strengthing existing friendships while forging new ones. They also offer an opportunity for us to celebrate our role in laying the foundation for what Mason is today.
This year we're proud to support three charitable organizations founded by Mason alums (see below for more information).
Join the Decades at Homecoming 2026 (January 31st and February 6-9th). Get ready for plenty of excitement, laughter, and reflection. You won’t be disappointed. GMU whaaat!

One Christmas Eve, some utterly different passengers happen to board the same train, each with their own problems and dreams. Suddenly, the train comes to a stop in the middle of a snowy field, miles from any signs of civilization and completely disconnected. Now everyone will have to organize a festive dinner right there in the buffet car. While waiting for the first star, all the passengers unite and form one big Ukrainian family. And miracles begin to happen.
The film is in Ukrainian with English subtitles.

WAPPNA—Women Physicians of APPNA—represents a powerful community of women physicians dedicated to empowering women and children across North America and Pakistan. Founded in 2008 by visionary women physicians including Dr. Naheed Chaudhry, Dr. Humeraa Qamar, Dr. Shaheen Mian, and Dr. Sarwat Iqbal, this Fairfax, VA-based organization emerged from a shared recognition that women physicians needed a focused platform to address underserved populations and advance women's leadership in medicine.
What distinguishes WAPPNA is its commitment to both professional excellence and humanitarian impact. The founding members realized that while the broader APPNA organization had achieved tremendous success, a specialized focus on women's empowerment and children's welfare required a dedicated entity with limited resources but unlimited passion. This philosophy has proven transformative—WAPPNA has evolved from facing initial skepticism into a recognized and respected force within the medical community, attracting physicians who share a deep commitment to serving the vulnerable.
Today, WAPPNA fosters meaningful connections among its diverse membership through networking events, wellness initiatives, mentorship opportunities, and professional development programs. The organization's current leadership, including President Dr. Naheed Chaudhry, continues to build on this legacy by organizing collaborative events and exploring innovative ways to support members' holistic well-being. Beyond professional advancement, WAPPNA members have participated in medical missions to assist Rohingya refugees and engaged in various social welfare initiatives. For women physicians seeking a community that values both professional growth and meaningful service, WAPPNA offers membership that connects you with like-minded professionals dedicated to positive change.
Based in Fairfax, VA, the Afghan Medical Professionals Association of America (AMPAA) unites Afghan healthcare professionals in a mission-driven organization dedicated to advancing medical education and providing humanitarian care to all people. As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, AMPAA embodies a commitment to service that transcends borders, extending support to communities both within the United States and in Afghanistan.
Founded on principles of inclusivity and compassion, AMPAA has emerged as a vital bridge between Afghan medical professionals and the broader healthcare system. Since mid-August 2021, the organization has played an instrumental role in supporting U.S. government processes and refugee resettlement efforts, partnering with state departments of health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and private sector organizations. This collaborative approach reflects AMPAA's deep understanding of the specific healthcare challenges facing Afghan refugees and displaced populations.
What distinguishes AMPAA within the Fairfax community and nationally is its culturally competent approach to medical assistance. The organization recognizes that effective healthcare requires more than clinical expertise—it demands cultural understanding, linguistic sensitivity, and genuine connection to the communities served. AMPAA's diverse board of medical professionals brings lived experience and professional credibility to every initiative. By uniting Afghan healthcare providers under a shared humanitarian vision, AMPAA creates pathways for professional growth, community support, and equitable access to medical care. The organization's non-discriminatory approach ensures that assistance reaches all individuals, reflecting a belief that quality healthcare and professional opportunity should be available to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.
