What is a sillbord or Sillunch?
A sillbord (literally “herring table” in Swedish) is a traditional Swedish buffet-style spread centered around pickled herring, usually accompanied by classic sides like:
Boiled potatoes
Sour cream and chives
Crispbread (knäckebröd)
Cheese
Hard-boiled eggs
Various sauces and garnishes
Sometimes cold cuts or smoked fish
It's a staple of Swedish celebrations, especially during holidays like Midsummer, Christmas (Julbord), and Easter, but can also be enjoyed at special lunches like Sillunch.
Think of it as a smaller, more focused cousin of the full smörgåsbord, with herring taking center stage.

Serving the Romanian community and Washington State residents in Redmond, WA, the Honorary Consulate of Romania operates as a grassroots organization committed to strengthening cultural and diplomatic connections. Staffed entirely by volunteers who receive no financial support from the Romanian government, this unique institution embodies a spirit of dedicated public service focused on building meaningful relationships between people and institutions. The consulate takes pride in supporting local Romanian cultural events, welcoming official visitors from Romania, and creating pathways for dialogue between Washington State and Romanian governmental and business leaders. By operating on a voluntary basis, the Honorary Consulate demonstrates a deep commitment to the local community while respecting the legal boundaries that define its role. Rather than attempting to replicate official governmental functions, the organization has thoughtfully positioned itself as a community connector and cultural ambassador. This approach allows the consulate to focus on what it does best: fostering genuine connections, sharing cultural knowledge, and facilitating meaningful exchanges between Redmond and the broader Washington State region with Romania. The consulate's transparency about its limitations—clearly communicating what it cannot do—reflects its integrity and commitment to serving the community responsibly and honestly.
Based in Redmond, Washington, the South Asian Bar Association of Washington represents a dedicated community of legal professionals united by their heritage and commitment to service. SABAW functions as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that goes beyond traditional bar association activities to create meaningful connections between South Asian lawyers, law students, and the communities they serve.
At its core, SABAW is built on the principle that legal professionals have a responsibility to give back to their communities. The organization brings together South Asian attorneys who share a passion for addressing legal issues affecting the South Asian community while advancing broader social, economic, and political interests. This community-centered approach distinguishes SABAW as more than just a networking organization—it's a platform for collective impact.
The membership of SABAW spans across Washington State and includes both experienced attorneys and aspiring law students eager to make a difference. Members receive regular updates through newsletters, gain access to exclusive job boards, and participate in mentorship relationships that foster professional growth and personal connection. The organization maintains affordability and accessibility, with nominal annual membership fees ensuring that lawyers at all career stages can participate.
Through legal clinics, scholarships, and fellowship programs, SABAW demonstrates its commitment to expanding opportunities for underrepresented voices in the legal profession. As an active branch of the North American South Asian Bar Association, SABAW contributes to a nationwide movement of South Asian legal professionals working to bridge communities and strengthen the legal system's responsiveness to diverse populations. The organization continues to expand its reach and impact through the dedicated efforts of its board and membership.
Founded in 1958 by twenty-two dedicated mothers, the Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Seattle Chapter represents over 60 years of commitment to youth excellence and community service in Redmond, Washington and the surrounding region. As the 98th chapter to join the national organization, the Seattle Chapter was built on the visionary philosophy of Marion Stubbs Thomas, which emphasizes bringing children together to form lasting friendships, engage in cultural learning, and grow into conscientious citizens.
The organization's deep roots in the Redmond community reflect a mission centered on nurturing future African-American leaders through meaningful relationships and shared values. Today, the chapter serves as a gathering place for families across King and Snohomish Counties, creating spaces where children can play together, learn from one another, and develop a strong sense of civic responsibility. The membership spans diverse communities from Bellevue to Snohomish, united by a common commitment to excellence and community enrichment.
Each January, the Seattle Chapter honors its founding mothers through an annual Founders' Day Celebration, recognizing the vision and dedication that established this vital community institution. The chapter's evolution, including the addition of an Associates Mothers Group, demonstrates its ongoing dedication to strengthening families and children in the Redmond area. By combining cultural activities, volunteer opportunities, and philanthropic engagement, the organization embodies the principle that collective effort creates lasting positive change for all children in the community.
