The honorary consulates augment Finland’s network of diplomatic missions, made up of embassies, consulate generals, consulates and other liaison offices. An honorary consulate is headed by an honorary consul. Honorary consuls are private individuals who take care of their tasks on a part-time basis without remuneration.
Within the scope of a specific geographical area, an honorary consul monitors the rights of Finns and foreigners permanently residing in Finland. He or she provides advice and guidance for distressed Finnish citizens and foreigners permanently residing in Finland who are temporarily abroad, assisting them in their contacts with local authorities or the nearest Finnish embassy or consulate. Certain types of notarized certificates can be acquired through an honorary consul. Honorary consuls do not accept passport applications nor do they handle matters pertaining to visas or residence permits. Honorary consuls cannot serve as attorneys in judicial proceedings or as legal advisers.
Together with diplomatic missions, an honorary consul promotes economic and cultural relations between Finland and the country in question, and takes part in strengthening Finland’s image abroad. Western US is one of the leading economies in multiple industries. Creativity combined with innovations and risk-taking culture, as well as the availability and amount of capital and venture capital investments make it a unique market. Technology and its development play a central role in the Western US - many of the world's largest ICT companies have headquarters in the area. Within the Consulate's jurisdiction, the most significant "economic hubs" are Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley and San Diego. Additionally, Seattle in Washington State; Phoenix in Arizona; Denver in Colorado and Portland in Oregon are among important growing economic centers.
We at the Consulate General of Finland focus on two main areas: Trade promotion and consular services. The objective of trade promotion is to connect business communities and promote partnerships and alliances between Finnish and US companies, organizations, universities and research institutions. The industries of main focus are the major industries in California - namely, cleantech, healthcare, ICTs, gaming and creative industries. The Consulate organizes events, seminars and trade missions, conducts research and builds networks within its area of operation.
The objective is to maintain Finland's positive reputation and promote Finland's strengths and the Nordic culture. The Consulate General collaborates closely with the Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C., the Consulate General of Finland in New York and other members of the Team Finland USA network, as well as with other local organizations and honorary consuls.
The second main function of the Consulate is to offer consular services to Finnish citizens as well as immigration and visa services to foreign nationals. There are about 10,000 Finns within the Consulate's jurisdiction. In addition to consular services, the Consulate provides assistance in cases of emergency.

Finlandia Foundation National's mission is to sustain both Finnish-American culture in the United States and the ancestral tie with Finland by raising funds for grants and scholarships, initiating innovative national programs and networking with local chapters.
As the number of first and second generation Finnish-American immigrants begins to dwindle, it becomes increasingly important to keep Finnish-Americans and their local chapter organizations across the country connected, inspired and committed to maintaining an awareness of their unique and vibrant culture and heritage.
Finlandia Foundation National raises funds to strengthen its endowment and ensure the continuation of its programs. The Performer of the Year and the Lecturer of the Year programs focus attention on the outstanding artistic and academic contributions of the Finnish-American community. Those selected for these annual, national positions travel and appear at chapter organizations throughout the United States.
Finlandia Foundation National also provides scholarships to students in multiple fields of study, and to American and Finnish law students. FFN awards dozens of grants each year providing critical and all too rare funding for individuals pursuing the artistic, musical and cultural traditions that represent the heritage of Finland and the diverse interests of Finnish America.
These programs, not offered by any other organization in the United States today, are what make the strengthening of the Finlandia Foundation National organization so compelling.
Finnish heritage and Finnish-American traditions and culture are too rich and too valuable to be lost.
By building a solid network of chapters throughout the United States and increasing the number and amount of grants and scholarship for Finnish-American individuals and programs, Finlandia Foundation National will continue to inspire and strengthen the Finnish-American community of the United States for years to come.
Finlandia Foundation National, a California non-profit organization, is governed by a Board of Trustees.
Independent Finlandia Foundation National chapters coast to coast are chartered to use the Finlandia Foundation National name and logo and operate in support of the Foundation’s mission.
