Georgia State Medical Association, Inc. (GSMA) is the collective voice of African American physicians and a leading force for parity and justice in medicine and the elimination of disparities in health.
Since its inception in 1893, Georgia State Medical Association (GSMA) has represented the specific interests and concerns of African-American physicians and their patients.
GSMA continues to be the conscience of medicine in the state by working to end the disparities in health care and to improve the quality of health of minorities. Representing the interests of more than 3,000 African American physicians and the patients they serve, with six affiliated societies across the state, Georgia State Medical Association has been firmly established in a leadership role in medicine.
In 1890, a group of African American health care professionals was organized known as the Atlanta Medical Association of Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists. The organization was formed to help Black healthcare professionals navigate the oppressive environment in which they tried to practice. Despite being marginalized by the majority organizations of the day, they understood how important it was to have their own medical society to help them deal with the issues of the time.
Since 1890 our mission has been to make healthcare universally accessible and attainable for all. We empower underrepresented minority communities to achieve health equity by mentoring the pipeline of future minority physicians, and by serving as vocal advocates for our network of members and patients
Our mission is to create in the community a practical appreciation for the legal profession; to encourage persons of outstanding promise to attend first rate law schools and return to the communities that need their services most; to oppose arbitrary and capricious laws in our state with all the force and fiber of which we are capable as an organization; to uphold and extend the principles of justice in every phase of American life to the end that no one shall be discriminated against because of color, race, religious beliefs or national origin.
