Founded in 2010 by Dr. William Long, a compassionate family physician in Conover, North Carolina, OUTright Youth of Catawba Valley emerged from a deep commitment to serve young people struggling with their identity in isolation. Dr. Long witnessed firsthand the silent suffering of LGBTQ youth in his medical practice—young people facing rejection, bullying, and trauma with nowhere safe to turn. Determined to create change in Hickory and the surrounding Catawba Valley, he collaborated with community members, health professionals, and dedicated allies to establish the only organization of its kind in the region.
