France has three consular agencies in the Washington constituency, located in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Norfolk. Placed under the responsibility and control of the Consul General of France in Washington, they extend the consular network closer to French nationals. They are managed by an honorary consul.
Honorary consuls are not civil servants but private individuals who exercise their functions on a voluntary basis.
Their main mission is the protection of French people and their interests and the duty to report to the French consular authorities on events of interest to these authorities.
