Since 1980, Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom has been a pioneering community of LGBTQI legal professionals based in San Francisco, California, dedicated to creating a world where LGBTQI people live with dignity and equality under the law. Founded with the groundbreaking mission of encouraging LGBTQI legal professionals to become judges at a time when no openly LGBTQI judges existed, BALIF has grown into a transformative force for justice and inclusion in the legal profession.
BALIF's impact extends far beyond its membership. The organization was instrumental in founding the AIDS Legal Referral Panel in 1983, which has since provided free and low-cost legal assistance to over 72,000 people. BALIF played a pivotal role in authoring resolutions that became California Assembly Bill 2601, prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. The organization's leadership helped establish the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association and the Lavender Law Conference, now major national gatherings for LGBTQI legal professionals.
Today, BALIF's mission encompasses advocacy, justice, community empowerment, and professional development. The organization values LGBTQI justice, equality, community empowerment, development, diversity, and inclusion in everything it does. Through committees focused on amicus work, judiciary endorsements, law student programs, diversity and equity, and community activism, BALIF continues to strengthen professional and social ties among its members while building coalitions to combat discrimination. With over 40 years of history serving the San Francisco Bay Area legal community, BALIF remains committed to advancing LGBTQI rights through legal expertise, community connection, and unwavering advocacy.
Founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, the National Trans Bar Association represents a vital community of legal professionals committed to advancing trans rights and supporting underrepresented voices in the legal field. The NTBA is a bar association by and for trans legal professionals and cisgender allies who share a deep commitment to supporting trans people both within and outside the legal profession. The organization deliberately welcomes individuals who have historically been marginalized in law, including trans and cisgender women and femmes, people of color, people who have experienced poverty, those with criminal justice system involvement, and members of immigrant communities. Members work across the full spectrum of legal practice—from government positions to nonprofit social justice organizations to private law firms—united by a shared mission to support trans people in the legal profession and increase the trans community's access to affordable, culturally competent legal services. The NTBA's diverse membership hails from different regions across the United States, bringing varied professional experiences and perspectives to the organization's work. Through annual reports, media engagement, and community outreach, the National Trans Bar Association continues to build an inclusive organization that recognizes the intersectional nature of social justice work and fosters bold, creative legal strategies to expand formal protections for transgender and gender nonconforming people.
