Equality Illinois builds a better Illinois by advancing equal treatment and full acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
Equality Illinois envisions a fair and unified Illinois where everyone is treated with dignity and respect and where all people live freely regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or gender expression.
OUR VALUES
Inclusiveness: Equality Illinois belongs to all those who believe in its vision and mission. Staff and volunteers will be accessible to and proactively engage others in EQIL’s statewide community as owners of the vision and mission.
Respect: Equality Illinois believes in the value of others — their opinions and their work. It is respect for others that builds collaborations and partnerships.
Fairness: Equality Illinois believes that everyone should have the same rights, responsibilities and opportunities afforded to them regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
Equality Illinois was founded in 1991 as the Illinois Federation for Human Rights to secure, protect and defend the basic civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer and questioning transgender (LGBTQ) Illinoisans. The founders of the Chicago-based organization were activists Arthur Johnston , Rick Garcia and the late Jon Henri Damski and Lana Hostetler, who had played key roles in the 1988 passage of Chicago’s Human Rights Ordinance. The name was changed to Equality Illinois in 2000, and the organization has grown to become the state’s oldest, largest, and most effective LGBTQ equality organization.
Center on Halsted is the Midwest's most comprehensive community center dedicated to advancing community and securing the health and well-being of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people of Chicagoland. More than 1,000 community members visit the Center every day, located in the heart of Chicago's Lakeview Neighborhood.
We work hard to provide a safe and welcoming environment with programs and services for the entire community. Our programs range from volleyball, dance performances and cooking classes to rapid HIV testing, group therapy and vocational training. We partner regularly with other organizations and groups from across Chicago and the nation to provide additional programming for the community.
Center on Halsted also serves as an incubator for a number of smaller LGBTQ non-profit organizations, called Resident Partners. We provide operational support, space and resources for organizations that may otherwise find it difficult to interact and grow.
Center on Halsted's deep commitment to supporting the LGBTQ community is reflected in both the mission and vision of the organization.
Center on Halsted advances community and secures the health and well-being of the LGBTQ people of Chicagoland.
Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ+ individuals on the South and West sides of the city. We strive to empower, embolden, and educate each other through mutual aid, knowledge-sharing, and the creation of community-sourced resources as we build toward the liberation of all oppressed peoples.
We envision a society where all Black LGBTQ+ people can be free.
Affinity Community Services is a Black led, queer led organization on Chicago’s Southside dedicated to social justice in Black LGBTQ+ communities. For 25 years, we have centered Black queer women through community organizing, intergenerational programming, education, and healing justice.
We work to end the marginalization of Black LGBTQ+ people globally by building brave activist communities where all intersections of LGBTQ+ identity are fully embraced. Through activism, education, and transformative justice practices, we build avenues for collective action, LGBTQ+ justice, healing, and Black liberation.

Founded in 1973 after the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son, PFLAG is the nation's largest family and ally organization.
PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies. With nearly 400 chapters and 250,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas across America, PFLAG is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed.
PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ+ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ people.
