FreeState Justice is a legal advocacy organization that seeks to improve the lives of low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (“LGBTQ”) Marylanders. Despite recent, incremental judicial victories for the national LGBTQ community, the low-income LGBTQ population continues to struggle with legal challenges such harassment, complex family law issues, and anti-LGBTQ discrimination in employment, housing, foster care, healthcare and public accommodations. In addition to needing attorneys with specific knowledge of how the law affects LGBTQ citizens, LGBTQ clients need attorneys who will treat them with respect and understanding. FreeState’s mission is to combine direct legal services with education and outreach to ensure that the low-income LGBTQ community Maryland receives fair treatment in the law and society.
FreeState Justice was formed when FreeState Legal Project and Equality Maryland merged in the spring of 2016; the new name (an earlier name of Equality Maryland) was announced at an event in Baltimore on June 30, 2016. A history of each organization follows.

Welcome to PFLAG Mid-Shore, also known as the Chestertown Chapter. PFLAG is working to make sure that all people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer are not only valued by society, but take pride in and value themselves. We do this through providing peer-to-peer support, educating people on the issues that are important to the community, and advocating for inclusive policies and laws.
PFLAG Chestertown was created as part of a grassroots effort to establish a voting base for the passage of the Marriage Equality Bill in 2011. We have found many new ways to be involved in important legislative efforts since that bill became law in 2012. We work at the local level to help families navigate schools and support services and at the state level to fight against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and support more protections for LGBTQ+ members and families.
PFLAG advocates for LGBTQ+ equality through civil rights legislation and legal protections. PFLAG National has filed numerous briefs amici on behalf of all PFLAG members, sharing family voices to amplify our message: love is love, family is family, marriage is marriage. Through our legal arguments and these firsthand accounts by parents, grandparents, siblings, and couples and their children, we demonstrate that current marriage laws discriminate against people who are gay or lesbian by relegating their relationships to inferior status and repudiating the legal argument that same-sex couples joining in marriage pose risks for the institution of marriage and threaten children. Additionally, we have filed briefs amici on the dangerous practice of so-called “reparative therapy.”
