The Justinian Society of Philadelphia
Founded in 1935, the Justinian Society is a legal organization comprised of attorneys, judges and law students of Italian-ancestry. Located in Philadelphia, the Society's members celebrate generations of involvement within the legal community.
Justinian Society members are engaged in activities directed toward fostering a spirit of good fellowship, maintaining honor and dignity of the legal profession, performing civic duties, administering justice, and promoting the study of law. The Society promotes continuing education in law, supports the advancement of qualified and distinguished Justinians in public office, serves the Italian-American legal profession and the community, and strives to uphold a positive image and take action against negative stereotyping against Italian-Americans.
The Justinian Society is an educational, non-profit organization of lawyers whose ancestry is Italian. It is engaged in activities directed toward achieving its purposes which are:
1. To foster a spirit of good fellowship and mutual cooperation among its members;
2. To maintain the honor and dignity required of the legal profession;
3. To maintain a high standard of ethical conduct among its members and with other members of the bar;
4. To promote and encourage the more profound study of the law, the due administration of justice and reform in the law;
5. To coordinate their efforts in the discharge of their civil and professional responsibilities to the community.
In addition to being concerned with maintaining the highest standards of the legal profession, the Society seeks to support highly qualified Justinians for public office, including the judiciary.

The name UNICO was selected as best representing the nature and the character of this fledgling organization. The name is the Italian word for unique, one of a kind. The founders believed that UNICO would be the only one of its kind because it placed service to the community before and above fraternity. At the same time they hoped that the rest of society would come to know and understand the real contributions of Italian Americans to our way of life. Its sole purpose was to unite all Italian Americans and motivate them to become more civic minded. In order to accomplish this, members would have to understand that they would have to make sacrifices, not for personal gain, but for service to others. In the ensuing years UNICO became an acronym that stood for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity.

Carbondale Unico
The Carbondale UNICO Chapter was chartered in 1959 and currently has 54 members. We are host to 2nd National Vice-President Glenn Pettinato, Foundation Board Member Peter Pettinato, and PA II District Governor Chip Calabro. Sr. Member Luke Pollitts was one of the original charter members and is still active in the chapter today. Our chapter continues to grow strong.
As a member of the UNICO National, the Carbondale chapters' mission is to contribute to the well-being of our local communities by making significant contributions to deserving charities. UNICO strives to honor, perpetuate and disseminate the culture and ethnic heritage of our Italian immigrant ancestors, by supporting higher education and by educating and informing our members, local communities and our nation.
Through the years the Carbondale UNICO chapter has given thousands of dollars to local organizations such as the Red Cross, Carbondale YMCA and Special Olympics. The Carbondale chapter also gives scholarships to local students to promote Italian heritage.
